Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, today announced $2.7 million to assist twelve leading Australian scientific research organisations to collaborate with their Chinese counterparts on cutting-edge research projects.
"An outward looking and innovative approach to scientific research is essential to maintain Australia's prosperity," Senator Carr said.
"Each of these projects will contribute towards strengthening our national research effort and boosting our innovation performance."
The projects, spanning a variety of disciplines, were selected by scientific peer review on the basis of scientific merit, benefit to both Australia and China, and value for money.
"International research collaboration is vital for Australia to effectively address our own challenges and to contribute to solving global problems," Senator Carr said.
"Engaging with Chinese partners enables Australian researchers to tap into global networks, technologies and infrastructure to achieve even greater results."
The recipients will investigate a variety of topics across the medical, environmental, communications, agricultural and industrial fields.
The grants are provided from the Australia-China Special Fund for Scientific and Technological Cooperation, as part of the International Science Linkages program. Participating Australian research institutions, industry, and the Chinese Government will also contribute funds to the projects.
