$1.5M AWARDED TO BUILD AUSTRALIA-CHINA SCIENCE LINKS

Joint Australian-Chinese research into wireless communications and new medicines for treating infectious diseases are just some of the cutting-edge projects to receive $1.5 million in Australian Government grants today.

Seventeen grants to forge collaboration between leading Australian and Chinese science research organisations were announced by the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr.

"International engagement in science and research is paramount to the nation’s competitiveness. We cannot reach the heights of scientific achievement in isolation,” Senator Carr said.

“Each of the projects announced today will contribute towards Australia’s collaboration with China and our standing as a world-leader in innovation.

“Like Australia, China is investing heavily in science and research – recognising its crucial role as a driver of innovation and productivity.

“Engaging with Chinese partners enables Australian researchers to access international networks, technologies and infrastructure and realise greater benefits from their research efforts.”

The projects span a variety of disciplines, and were selected by scientific peer review on the basis of scientific merit, benefit to both Australia and China, and value for money.

The grants are provided from the Australia-China Special Fund for Scientific and Technological Cooperation, which is part of the International Science Linkages program.  Participating Australian and Chinese research institutions, Australian industry and the Chinese Government will also contribute funds to the projects.
