NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK 2009: 40 FUN EVENTS SHARE IN $500,000

The Super Mega Maths Battle for Planet Earth National Tour is one of 40 fun yet educational events to share in $500,000 in funding for National Science Week 2009.

Announcing the funding today, Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, said that the line-up of events was a perfect mix of education and entertainment.

"From a Science Ninja Van in Western Australia to a Young Galileos project in Wollongong, this will be a nationwide celebration of achievement across all fields of scientific research and development," Senator Carr said.

"The 40 events announced today are only the tip of the iceberg. They will be complemented by further funding for science projects in schools, a tour by international speakers and over 800 separate public events."

This year, National Science Week will be held from 15-23 August.

The funding will provide further opportunities to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy with stargazing, telescope building and talks from some of Australia's internationally renowned astronomers.

"I am encouraged by the number of indigenous projects in 2009. These include exploration of the interactions between Astronomy and Aboriginal lore, and between traditional approaches to bush food and modern science," Senator Carr said.

"National Science Week will be accessible for even our most remote communities through national tours, special televised programs, movies and online events.”

In addition to encouraging participation in scientific learning, science week activities will also highlight some of the national and global challenges that science is helping to address.

"I would like to encourage all Australians to take part in National Science Week as it highlights some of the most pressing issues for all Australians, the future of our environment, our economy and our wellbeing whilst celebrating Australia's global achievements in innovation, creativity and research,” Senator Carr said.
