Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, today announced $500,000 in funding to support National Science Week events and activities in 2010.
With a total of 1029 events held in metropolitan, regional and rural centres throughout Australia, National Science Week 2009 helped ignite the imagination of over one million Australians.
“As Australia competes globally in areas such as innovation, engineering, science and research, it is important for the whole country to be aware of our achievements and to encourage future growth in science,” Senator Carr said.
“National Science Week is a great opportunity for all Australians to get excited about science and this year we celebrated our biggest National Science Week to date.
“All Australians have the opportunity to participate in National Science Week in 2010 by applying for a grant to run a community science event in their local area.”
Applications for grants to run events in National Science Week 2010 are open now and close on Friday, 23 October 2009, at 5 pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time.
Grants are available to individuals and organisations interested in delivering a science event or activity for their local community.
Schools are also encouraged to host a National Science Week event in 2010, and grants will be available through the Australian Science Teachers’ Association early next year.
In 2010, National Science Week will run from 14 – 22 August.
