The Australian Government has today moved to secure the future of the Australian automotive industry through the introduction of the Automotive Transformation Scheme Bill 2009 and the ACIS Administration Amendment Bill 2009 into the House of Representatives.
These bills will implement the $3.4 billion Automotive Transformation Scheme (ATS) which sits at the centre of the Government’s $6.2 billion New Car Plan for a Greener Future.
“The Transformation Scheme is better targeted, greener and will boost the development of new skills that will ensure the industry’s future,” Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Carr said.
“Car making is a cornerstone of Australian manufacturing, making a vital contribution to our economy through employment, skills, innovation and exports.”
The ATS will replace the Automotive Competitiveness and Investment Scheme which, with the implementation of these Bills, will expire on 31 December 2010.
“This legislation will provide the automotive industry with ten years of policy certainty at a time when it is facing acute pressure both in Australia and internationally,” Senator Carr said.
“The ATS has a renewed focus on innovation with increased support for investment in research and development. It will restore much needed confidence to the industry as it deals with the ramifications of the global recession.
“The measures contained in these Bills will provide for the future by encouraging the development of new technologies supported by a highly skilled workforce.
“Innovation is the key to making the automotive industry greener and more internationally competitive. Through this legislation, the industry will be equipped to deal with the challenges posed by changing consumer preferences and climate change.”
