SPACE INDUSTRY COUNCIL CHAIR APPOINTED

Noted industry leader and academic, Dr Rosalind (Ros) Dubs will chair the newly established Space Industry Innovation Council formed to advise the Australian Government on fostering a revitalised space industry sector.

Dr Dubs, who recently ended a term as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Relations) of the University of Technology Sydney, is highly regarded for her breadth of experience in industry, universities and government organisations.

”I’m delighted that Dr Dubs has agreed to chair the council,” Senator Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science, and Research, said today.

“The council will be made up of people with leadership skills, knowledge and expertise in the space science and industry. I expect to announce the full membership shortly.

“Australia has an excellent record for innovation and collaboration on space activities, bringing Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the Moon to the world, laser tracking of space debris and one of the world’s fastest Scramjet engine technologies.

“Our task now is to boost that effort, and Dr Dubs will have a key role in that,” Senator Carr said.

Dr Dubs said she looked forward to working with other council members in providing strategic advice on innovation priorities and championing innovation across the space industry focusing on the workhorse applications of communications, navigation and Earth Observations.

“I am thrilled to be invited to chair this new council, and excited to be part of setting a new direction for the Australian space sector,” Dr Dubs said.

“Along with providing advice to the Government on Australia's civil space matters, my council colleagues and I will act as important innovation advocates to capitalise on Australia's niche space-related strengths and opportunities."

The council will also consider relevant implications for space science and industry arising from the Defence White Paper and the National Security Science and Innovation Strategy.
