SMALLER RETAILERS GENERATING BIGGER RETAIL SALES GROWTH

Analysis of the latest retail trade figures reveals that smaller retailers experienced especially strong growth in turnover during March 2009, Small Business Minister Craig Emerson said today.

"Smaller retailers recorded a seasonally adjusted increase in turnover of 2.9 per cent in March which compares favourably with the 2.2 per cent increase in total retail trade," Dr Emerson said.

"There is no doubt that small retailers are benefiting from the Rudd Government's economic stimulus package."

Dr Emerson said that retail turnover of smaller retailers has increased by 5.5 per cent since November, compared with 4.5 per cent for retailers as a whole.

The Government has had small business firmly in mind in designing both stimulus packages.

“Small retailers are benefiting from the cash payments and tradies are getting work from the two-thirds of the $42 billion Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan that is being devoted to infrastructure," Dr Emerson said.
