Wind tower investment boosts Whyalla

22 Nov 2012

The Gillard Government today welcomed the announcement by Siemens Ltd that it is working with E&A Contractors to have a new wind tower manufacturer based in Whyalla supply up to 20 wind towers for the Snowtown II wind farm project.

E&A Contractors has retained key equipment and personnel from former wind tower manufacturers RPG and are planning to set up a wind tower manufacturing capacity in the South Australian regional centre.

Siemens Ltd are working with E&A Contractors to secure up to 20 towers for the Snowtown II project from E&A Contractors.

The Government congratulates both companies on their cooperative approach and on their commitment to Australian wind tower manufacturing.

The Renewable Energy Target and the carbon price are stimulating investment in renewable energy.

Today's announcement shows renewable energy investment is not only good for the environment but is also good for the economy, generating jobs and opportunities for local manufacturing.

More than 80 per cent of wind turbine towers used in Australia to date have come from Australian suppliers, supporting home grown investment and jobs.

The Federal Opposition notoriously claimed that Whyalla would be wiped off the map.

This new investment shows that far from being wiped off the map, regional centres like Whyalla can look forward to a prosperous clean energy future with valuable new manufacturing jobs and new industries.
